U.S. Postage Stamps Could Increase To 49 cents
The United States Postal Service announced yesterday that it wants an increase in the price of a First-Class Mail single-piece letter from 46 cents to 49 cents. The U.S. Postal Service said that the proposed changes, which would go into effect in January 2014, are intended to generate $2 billion in incremental annual revenue for the Postal Service. The price hike would have to be approved by the Postal Regulatory Commisison The proposed increase in First-Class Mail pricing include:
- Letters (1 oz.) — 3-cent increase to 49 cents
- Letters additional ounces — 1-cent increase to 21 cents
- Letters to all international destinations (1 oz.) — $1.15
- Postcards — 1-cent increase to 34 cents
Stamp prices have stayed consistent with the average annual rate of inflation of 4.2 percent since the Postal Service was formed in 1971. Including the 2014 hike, the cost of a U.S. first class stamp will have increased by 10 cents in eight years since 2006 when it was 39 cents. The stamp price over this time period will have increased by 25.64%.
Except in exceptional or extraordinary circumstances, postage price increases are capped at the rate of inflation as measured by the CPI-U. The Postal Service is filing a price increase above CPI-U due to extraordinary and exceptional circumstances which have contributed to continued financial losses. The Postal Service recorded a $15.9 billion net loss last fiscal year and expects to record a loss of roughly $6 billion in the current fiscal year, and has an intolerably low level of available liquidity even after defaulting on its obligation to make prefunding payments for retiree health benefits.

Thank DARRELL ISSA and his cohorts! They all need to be thrown out of Congress!
I just signed up for auto bill pay for all my bills... used to spend about $10 a month on stamps... now I spend $0... how is that going to get you the extra "2 billion"? wow...what a bunch of idiots
I also signed up for bill pay online. Someone hacked into my acount changed my password and username and personal information. This is costing me a whole lot more than 10 dollars a month to fix. I stick with the old way of paying bills. Mailing them
