Merritt Island Girl Dies In Motorcycle Crash

UPDATE:  Merritt Island Girl Killed In Motorcycle Accident Identified

MERRITT ISLAND, Florida — The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a 13-year-old Merritt Island girl was killed in a motorcycle accident on State Road 3 (Courtney Parkway) at noon on Sunday at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

67-year-old Michael Bowers of Merritt Island was riding a 1994 Honda motorcycle northbound on Courtney Parkway with the girl as a passenger.   Meanwhile, 64-year-old Grace Bowers of Merritt Island was riding a 2002 Honda motorcycle behind the first motorcycle.

According to FHP reports, for an unknown reason, the girl fell off the 1994 Honda and the front of the 2002 Honda then struck the rear of the 1994 Honda.  The impact caused both motorcycles to fall over and both riders were ejected.

Michael Bowers was transported to Halifax Medical Center in serious condition.  Grace Bowers was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

At this time, FHP troopers are investigating an allegation that the first motorcycle struck a deer prior to the second motorcycle striking the first motorcycle.
