NOAA: 40% Chance Tropical Cyclone Forms Near Florida

MIAMI, Florida – NOAA’s National Hurricane Center issued a Tropical Weather Outlook at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, July 5, 2020, due to the presence of a system that has a 40% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone near or over Florida within the next 5 days.

Recent satellite and radar observations indicate that a small low-pressure system has formed within a broader area of low pressure near the northern Gulf Coast (marked with an orange “X”).

The low is producing a few showers near its center, and some slight development is possible before it moves inland early Monday.

NHC forecasters say that the broader low-pressure system is forecast to move northeastward and could emerge offshore of the Carolinas later this week, where environmental conditions are expected to be more conducive for development.

This system has a 40% chance of tropical cyclone formation within the next 5 days and a 20% chance within the next 48 hours.

If the system becomes a tropical storm or hurricane, the next names on the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Names List are Edouard and Fay, depending on whether or not Tropical Depression 5 strengthens into a tropical storm first.
